Solid perfume has been around since the early years of perfumery. In fact, English women had used it as pomanders–perfume in containers used as pendants.
Solid perfume is light, does not spill, long-wearing and not greasy. It is also alcohol-free, which makes it good for people who have sensitive skin. Plus, the sweet almond oil ingredient has health benefits. It is known as an effective emollient which improves complexion and adds glow to dull skin. Applying sweet almond oil also provides instant relief from muscle pain.
Entrepreneurs who are already into the business of personal care products or giveaways may add this to their menu. Solid perfume may be packaged as wedding, birthday, debut or anniversary giveaway.
Ingredients and formulation:
6g Beeswax
6g Sweet Almond Oil
3g Fragrance Oil
1pc 10g Polypropylene ring container
1pc 5g Polypropylene ring container
Procedure:
Step 1: Melt the beeswax in a double boiler.
Step 2: Once the beeswax is 100 percent liquefied, add the sweet almond oil.
Step 3: Mix well and add fragrance. To come up with different scents, either experiment or research on good fragrance combinations. Continue stirring until well mixed.
Step 4: Remove from heat and pour in ring containers. Use either a 10g-ring or 5g-ring container.
Step 5: Let it cool to solidify.
This project could yield 15g of solid perfume or one 10g- and 5g-ring, and costs P35 including the packaging and the overhead costs. Profit margins for this type of products are usually high, around 100 to 150 percent. So a 10-g solid perfume may be sold for P60 to P150 depending on the target market. Putting premium on solid perfume will give it a high-end perception, however, the packaging must also be elegant or eye-catching.
Tips:
– Use a double boiler in melting the beeswax to avoid scorching. Do not melt the beeswax on direct fire.
– The melting point of beeswax is between 620C to 640C. Discoloration will occur if the temperature rises to above 850C.
– Acrylic jars may be used instead of polypropylene containers, but you have to let the mixture cool off a bit before pouring it in acrylic jars.
– Make the packaging and label chic and elegant. Aside from ring-type containers, jars and other shaped containers may also be used.
Natural Solid Perfume
Ingredients Needed:
1. Beeswax: This can be found at local health stores, craft stores, or candle-making supply stores. It is available either in its natural golden color, or it is also available in a bleached white color. It can be purchased either in blocks that can be grated with a cheese grater to get smaller pieces that are easier to work with, or it can also be purchased as small pellets. For this recipe you will need one tablespoon.
2. Jojoba oil: This can be found at many grocery stores and health stores. You will need three tablespoons for this recipe.
3. Vitamin E (optional): This can be found either as capsules in most health and grocery stores, or it can also be found as a liquid in many drug stores. You will need either two capsules, or 6-8 drops of liquid for this recipe. Besides being an antioxidant, Vitamin E is also a natural preservative.
4. Essential oils: These not only give your perfume its own unique scent and flavor, they also add the benefits of the essential oil you use to your creation. You will need about 90-120 drops of essential oil for this recipe.
Instructions:
1. Pack grated beeswax or beeswax pellets into a Tablespoon size measuring spoon until it is packed level with the top, then dump the beeswax into a heat-proof measuring cup (such as a Pyrex™ brand measuring cup).
2. Add 3 Tablespoons of jojoba oil to the beeswax.
3. Place the measuring cup in a large frying pan that is filled with 1″ of hot water.
4. Place the frying pan and measuring cup on the stove and turn the burner on low.
5. Stir the mixture in the measuring cup with a popsicle stick or bamboo skewer every couple of minutes until the wax is completely melted (about 15-20 minutes).
6. Turn off stove and carefully remove the measuring cup from the frying pan and place the measuring cup on a towel on a counter-top or table.
7. If desired, stir in the contents of 1 capsule of vitamin E (or 3-4 drops liquid vitamin E).
8. Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then stir in 90-120 drops of your desired essential oil or blend. Note: You may find it easier to pre-measure the essential oil in another container and add it all at once.
9. Quickly pour the mixture into 1/4 oz lip gloss containers, or any other small jar or container. This recipe will fill three or four containers.
10. Allow mixture to cool for several hours. To use, take a small amount of the solid perfume from the container with your finger, and place on the wrists, the neck, or any other location on the skin that is desired.
Extra Ideas:
1. Create fun labels for your perfume using 1″ x 4″ labels. Set up your labels so that one label fits on top of the other label on each 1″ x 4″ label, then cut the label in half after printing so you have two labels that each measure 1/2″ x 4″. This size fits perfectly on the bottom half of our 1/4 oz lip gloss containers. You may also want to create a 1″ circular label for the top of the container.
2. For a really awesome gift for someone who likes perfume, give them the materials to make their very own perfume-blending kit! To do this, package several essential oils that blend well together in 5/8 dram or 1 dram vials (some oils that might be good to include in a basic blending kit include: cedarwood, cinnamon, clove, clary sage, fir, fennel, frankincense, geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, orange, pine, patchouli, peppermint, rose (or rosewood/bois de rose), sandalwood, spearmint, spruce, vetiver, vanilla absolute, or ylang ylang). Include a few empty glass containers to create their blends in. Include grated beeswax and jojoba oil, as well as this recipe to make a solid perfume. You may also want to include materials and instructions to make a simple alcohol-less roll-on perfume. To make this, mix about 25 drops of essential oil with 75 drops of jojoba oil. Pour mixture in a 1/6 oz. roll-on vial and allow to sit for 2-3 days before using to allow the mixture time to meld together. You may also wish to include materials and instructions to make a simple room spray. The book 500 Formulas for Aromatherapy contains some excellent blend suggestions to get you started blending, and the book Reference Guide for Essential Oils also includes a section on blending in the front, as well as suggestions for most single oils of other oils that blend well with it.
