Bitcoin Association, the Switzerland-based non-profit global industry organization advancing the enterprise adoption of the BSV blockchain, has released a shortlist of six semi-finalists for the fourth BSV Hackathon. The six-week coding period for the blockchain competition started on June 14 and ended on July 16.
The Fourth BSV Hackathon Semi-Finalists
- Alien Wallet (Tom Middleton) – Bitcoin SV wallet that leverages Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) as well as a pay-to-order hash function.
- Bitcoin Phone (Joe Thomas) – Voice-over-Bitcoin protocol which can transmit audio between users over Bitcoin transactions by leveraging the non-finality of nSequence to enable close to real-time data streaming.
- BitCommit (Gary Miller, Vince Miller) – Trustless fitness competition application that leverages both micropayments and smart contracts.
- CATN8 (Marcel Gruber, Dave Foderick, Thor) – Micropayment-based online video streaming platform which offers a fully featured SPV wallet implementation.
- TimeKet (Joonyeong Park, Youngjin Jang, Seyoung Jang) – Unique SPV wallet service which offers integrated systems for reservation and payment validation.
- TKS Pnt (Meta Taro) – Point tokenisation system designed to be used by merchants and their customers.
All BSV Hackathons have different themes, and for this year, participants are asked to create a peer-to-peer (P2P) application that will maximize the unique capabilities of the BSV blockchain, which includes unbounded scaling and high throughput. The release of the Teranode project later this year will effectively increase the BSV network’s capacity to over 50,000 transactions per second.
The P2P application submitted as final entry also need to make use of the new SPV Channels solution and Merchant API (mAPI) of the BSV network. With all of these very specific requirements, the BSV Hackathon has leveled up its degree of difficulty. However, judges and proponents of the competition have been impressed with the high quality of final projects submitted.
“With a challenging theme and complex requirements to remind developers about the often-forgotten P2P aspect of Satoshi’s intended Bitcoin system, it’s been impressive to see the different approaches employed by our participants,” Bitcoin Association Founding President Jimmy Nguyen said.
“Working with all-new technologies—just like we tasked participants in the 4th Bitcoin SV Hackathon with doing with SPV Channels—is never an easy proposition. But challenging situations often lead to innovative solutions, which we’ve certainly seen with the standard of entries in this year’s Hackathon. Having worked intimately on introducing the Bitcoin SV implementation of SPV Channels, I’ve been intrigued to see how developers would approach it—and for a first foray with this new technology, I’ve been impressed with the early returns we’ve seen so far,” Steve Shadders, nChain CTO and BSV Technical Standards Committee Chairman, added.
Three finalists will be selected from the list above, and one representative from each will present their final projects in front of a live audience during the CoinGeek Conference, which will take place at The Sheraton, Times Square in New York on October 5 to 7. A panel composed of experts within the blockchain sphere, as well as the live audience, will then vote for the winner.
Aside from being able to attend the three-day blockchain conference, where they will be able to interact with professionals and potential investors, the winner will receive $50,000 in BSV. The second runner-up will also take home $30,000 and the third runner-up $20,000, to complete the total prize pool of $100,000.
The BSV Hackathon continues its goal of discovering promising developers and innovators and providing them with an avenue to shine and be recognized. Blockchain-based platforms TonicPow, Britevue and Kyrt are examples of success stories—all BSV Hackathon finalists who have already launched their businesses and are actively enriching the blockchain space.
