If you’ve made it to your university graduation, then congrats – all of your years of hard work have paid off and you’ll be leaving university qualified not only in your chosen subject, but much more adept at life, too.
While it is undoubtedly a time for celebration, once the dust has settled it will become apparent that a next step needs to be taken – it’s time to decide how the next few years of your life will go, and free from the shackles from your degree, the options are hugely varied and hugely exciting.
For some students, their plan has been established for many years, and they will seamlessly move into their next phase, whether they are focused on their career or want to go travelling to far off locations. However, this is a time of life in which everyone moves at their own pace, and it’s about establishing exactly what is going to meet your needs and wants best.

1. Graduate Employment
The simplest route to take once you have left university is to head into a graduate role. Many companies offer graduate roles at starting pay rates, allowing you to enter the workforce and potentially solidify your place at the company for many years to come, if you are successful.
These graduate roles may not pay as much as a ‘senior’ position, but they will give you all the experience you need to integrate yourself into the workforce, which can take some time to adjust to. After all, it’s not just a case of learning new technical skills, but also a case of learning how to operate within the corporate environment, and managing yourself to ensure that you are able to maintain performance while taking on lots of new information.
2. Self-Employment
Another option to take once you have left university is self-employment. If you feel that the standard 9-5 routine is not for you, and you don’t feel the need to commute to an office everyday just to get your work done, then freelancing your skills could be the alternative option you are looking for.
Of course, being self-employed isn’t all fun and games – it requires strong self-discipline and organization, as you need to be able to meet both the expectations of your customers, and also be on top of your own schedule. However, it can give you a strong sense of independence, and should you decide to set up your own business going forward, you could have a platform for success for years to come.
3. Further Education
If you’re not yet satisfied with your qualifications, further education could be the next step for you.
If you enjoy the student lifestyle and know that your ambitions require further qualifications such as Masters, Doctorate or PhD, further education will allow you to acquire the qualification while still continuing to develop as an adult and a person – and will allow you to either explore a new university and city, or stick around with the friends you have made during your undergraduate.
