Organizations are built on a fixed structure, with defined roles for each member. Routines and processes are often formulated in order to maximize the organization’s efficiency and effectiveness. This, in turn, results in a fixed imprint of an organizational culture that is resistant to radical change and is tryingly difficult to reshape. Globalization, mobile adaptability, and the onset of Information Technology are pressing factors that are making organizations change.

External factors usually motivate organizations to change. New technologies and new media largely contribute to leaders needing to usher in change in their organizations. Successful business leaders such as Jerry Angping realize that in order for an organization to instill changing trends, the organization has to have a dynamic culture that is also consistently changing. Angping is among the few that have experience-based knowledge that organizations which are able to quickly adapt to the changing external environment can create for themselves a competitive advantage over other companies.

The Process for Change

Successful change management starts with the leader’s realization of the need for change. Through imbibing change by example, successful business leaders motivate their peers to go through with the change in the organizational culture. Change management was pioneered by Harvard Business School Professor Dr. John P. Kotter. Dr. Kotter developed the 8-Step Process for Leading Change, invoking organizations to approach change through their leader in order to engage their workforces effectively.

The first step to effective change management is to create and establish a sense of urgency for the pressing need for change within the organization. When the change is imminent, the company must establish a guiding workforce to collaborate in the change. The workforce must then form a vision for the change in order to have a working goal. Once the vision is established, the company must then empower a larger part of the organization with the drive for change. When more people realize that change is necessary, the company must then change the structure of the system in order to eliminate threats to the change vision and tailor its processes to encourage a dynamic environment. Track short term results in order to consistently evaluate the results of the change, and celebrate short-term accomplishments to lift employee spirits with the change vision in mind. Develop the changed system to sustain the accelerated change, and keep producing more change within the system. The 8-Step Process completes when the change vision is firmly anchored in the organization’s culture.
